Match Play 1.20
Course:
Altadena
Date
We had a fine morning with clear skies and nice warmer weather... a perfect morning for golf. Most enjoyed this new format where it's nice that when you lose a hole, it doesn't matter by how many strokes, so you just move on to the next hole. You can see in many of the matches there can be a back and forth through the match.
De Bell 1.20
Course:
DeBell
Date
Our members arrived this morning wondering why they came in the first place, and may have left feeling the same. But De Bell is an interesting course and I do look forward go playing it again, just not too soon. Many of us learned to use the new Equitable Stroke Control method of picking up at triple bogey. (That is our club local rule for an otherwise complicated ESC system)
Kim led in low gross with his 91, and Jim Stowell was not that far behind even with lost balls and several hikes up the mountain side. He added a skin and on-in-one to his take. Vester hung in there for third and posted the other on-in-one.
Jack took Low Net honors and managed some fine putts on these difficult greens, adding two skins as well. Mike and Rob were second and third with Mike also picking up two skins.
Red, White & Blue
Course:
Altadena
Date
The warmer weather gave us a nice turnout for Red White & Blue. Vester was really hot taking low net plus 2 skin. Richard, Doc and Jim Stowell were tied for second. Tom Storey had the only on-in-one and added a skin as well. Bob Jimenez paid for his round with a skin.
Tin Whistle 12.19
Course:
Altadena
Date
We had a smallish turnout today fielding 16 players for Tin Whistle and were treated to a glorious morning, cool, clear and luminous. Oh and there was some decent golf as well. We welcomed Steven Griswold back from extended grandparenting duties and Joe Dean made an appearance.
Doc took first place honors but Jim Stowell topped the player purse with second in Tin Whistle, a skin and an on-in-one. Herman was in the running taking third with Ralph just finishing in the money. Don Paul and Vester had skins as well.
4 Man Scramble
Course:
Altadena
Date
We enjoyed another beautiful morning for our 4 Man Scramble tournament. It was a very tight race with first place going to Richard, Leo, Harry and Doc in a tie breaker over Ralph, Van, Jim R and Kim. The next two groups were also tied and one stroke behind the leaders.
Wilson 11.19
Course:
Wilson
Date
It was the best of times. Beautiful morning, lovely grounds, scenic skies, course in pretty good shape, greens were well tended.
It was the worst of times. Long long course. Fast and tricky greens and quite a few three putts and maybe a couple of 4 putts?
But we had fun, didn't we. Ralph took low net honors with a skin and Don settled for second in low net but added a skin and two on-in-ones. Kim had low gross with Jim Nelson taking second.
Turkey Shoot
Course:
Altadena
Date
There was a nice turnout of 24 members playing the annual Turkey Shoot. Harry Missakian, in the spirit of last weeks performance by Leo, took the only skin and added a turkey shoot payout to top the leaderboard. Others in the usual cast of characters who took their $10 are Richard, Don, Bob Bowdoin, Ralph, Van, Rob, Vester, Jim Stowell and Paul and Jack.
Richard and Don each added an on-in-one to their winnings.

Ralph had to settle for second in low gross but added a skin to his purse. There was a three way tie for second on low net with Harry Hirakawa, Leo, and Jim Rutledge sharing the honors. Mike Estes played with us as a guest/potential-member and had the other on-in-one.
Match Play
Course:
Altadena
Date
We only fielded four foursomes today perhaps because of the match play format. It was a beautiful morning to play and we noticed that the greens have recovered nicely from earlier maintenance and most of the fairways are looking.... better than fair.
I think most found the match play interesting and a different focus for playing golf. There were no all square matches.
Alhambra 10.19
Course:
Alhambra GC
Date
We had ten members playing Alhambra GC on a nice fall morning. The course was in good shape the greens well recovered from being punched and sanded. Don took low gross honors adding an on-in-one, with Ralph and Kim tied for second. Rob had a strong start and finished well enough to take low net adding an on-in-one and two skins. Ray had to settle for second in low net and had a skin as well.
Red White & Blue 10.19
Course:
Altadena
Date
Red White and Blue was played with recently punched and (variously) sanded greens. We played two putt maximum which seemed like a good call as you watched a perfect putt bumped off course at the last second. Paul took top honors with Ray close behind. Vester had to settle for two skins and an on-in-one, with Ralph and Kim also taking one skin each.
Don and Vester had strong rounds at 40 gross each.
5 Of Clubs 10.19
Course:
Altadena
Date
Today's 5 of clubs saw scores not much above average suggesting that those other 9 clubs are superfluous, but not really right? We were playing up on all the tees because the regular tee boxes were under maintenance. Still there were some pretty good scores.
Charles took low net today topping the leaderboard while Leo added a skin to his second place placing him at the top of payout list. Ray had enough nice holes to take two skins. Doc took third and added one of the five on-in-ones.
Vester took low gross honors with his 43, and had an on-in-one.

Ray continued in his winning ways taking low net with Jim Stowell and Herman tied for second.
We had 5 on-on-ones, all on that difficult 8th green.
There was a tie in the putting with both Van and Jim Stowell holing the putt and no opportunity for a tie breaker.
Santa Anita 9.19
Course:
Santa Anita
Date
Eleven members played the interesting Santa Anita course struggling a bit with the newly punched greens. Ray continued his strong play taking low net and a skin. Vester was in the hunt with third place adding an on-in-one.

Low Putts/ Low Net
Course:
Altadena
Date
We had a nice turnout today with great weather. The fairways are looking fantastic. How nice to enjoy such a fine muni course! From the looks of the scores, I wonder if people were playing for low putts? Vester had a very reasonable 42 with a bunch of 46's behind him. Vester wins low gross honors, but Herman takes the money in Low net. Richard carded the lowest putt count and we're assured there were no gimmes. Doc was a close second with a bunch tied for third in low putts. The skin pool was split between Leo and Jim Rutledge.

Vester added a skin and an on-in-one to his tie for third in low net. With Paul, Herman and Charles sharing in the third place tie.
Irons and Hybrids 8.19
Course:
Altadena
Date
There was a nice turnout on a beautiful morning for our Irons and Hybrid tournament where we hosted a guest player (new member?), Tom Wright. 4 Man Scramble 7.19
Course:
Altadena
Date
With summer vacations taking a toll, there were only 4 teams playing 4-Man Scramble this week. With the reduced lineup we enjoyed mixing up the parings a bit. All teams did very well with everyone playing under net par but the winning team's gross score was under par. Aren't scrambles fun! The team of Don, Joe, Park and Jim Stowell won the Scramble in a tie breaker over Richard's team. Ralph, Russ, John and Kim had to settle for third but only one point behind the leaders
Montebello 7.19
Course:
Montebello
Date
It was great to get back to the Montebello golf course with lots of interesting holes, and not so interesting bunkers. Kim's consistent play earned low gross honors, 2 skins and 2 on in ones. Nice round! Leo took low net honors adding a skin as well. We hope to play this course again in the fall and will look for better turnout.

Tin Whistle 7/19
Course:

Date
We had a nice turnout of 18 members on this near holiday event. Mike had a breakout day drilling putts from everywhere. He won the Tin Whistle event handily, added two of the four skins, scoring low net and low gross for the day. It was fun to watch that kind of round that we only occasionally get to enjoy ourselves. The only on-in-one came from Ralph on the more accessible 6th hole and he also had one of the skins. Vester had a typically wild day but managed a skin. Herman took second in the tournament

Match Play 5.19
Course:
Altadena
Date
The cold weather and chance of rain kept turnout a bit low but we did field 6 pairs playing this interesting Match Play format. The format also had several members playing with new partners as we tried to set pairings with fairly equal course handicaps. No pairings finished "all square". Scores were posted to GHIN since this is a valid format even when with yielded putts and conceded holes.
