2 Man Scramble 3.19
Course:
Altadena

Date

Jack and Jim Nelson paired up to take first in our 2-Man scramble beating Doc and Jim Rutledge by one stroke. There was a three way tie for third. This was a  relatively small field due to threat of rain and more cold weather.

Alhambra 3.19
Course:
Alhambra GC

Date

We visited Alhambra GC again this month for our away game enjoying some nice, but increasingly rare, spring weather.  Don was on the top of the winnings list with low gross honors, a skin, and two on-in-ones. Harry was close behind with low net, a skin, and an on-in-one. Vester had to settle for a tie for second but took two skins and two on-in-ones.

Criers 3.19
Course:
Altadena

Date

We had a nice turnout with the warmer weather for our Criers tournament.  As usual with this tournament the field was tightly packed with Russ on top of the leaderboard taking first in Criers with the only on-in-one.  Ralph was part of a five way tie for second but added on of only two skins to make a nice finish.

Aces Wild 3.19
Course:
Altadena

Date

Our Aces Wild tournament beat the odds and was played without rain!  Hopefully with more dry days we can get back to a better turnout.

Russ's putting put him in first place and added one of the three skins for the day.  Doc was close second, with Ralph and Don tied for third.

There were only two on-in-ones.

LGLN 2.19
Course:
Altadena

Date

We fielded three foursomes this morning and were rewarded with a bit of rain at the start, but just enough to "make it interesting".   Kim had nice round and topped the leaderboard with Low Gross and a skin. Don was close behind adding a skin to a second place finish. Russ took Low Net and Mike recouped  his entry fee taking second in low net. Jim Nelson had the only on-in-one.

4 Man Best Ball 2.19
Course:
Altadena

Date

I guess the threat of rain and the cold kept  a few members away so we had only 9 players for our 3-Man Best Ball tournament.  Kim and Ralph had strong days with Kim snagging 2 of the four skins.

Hansen 2.19
Course:
Hansen Dam

Date

Hansen Dam proved a difficult round for our members.  Perhaps the cold weather at Hansen led to cold play.  Jack topped the leaderboard with low net, 4 skins and 2 on-in-ones.  Kim continued his steady play and took low gross honors along with two skins.

Red White & Blue 2.19
Course:
Altadena

Date

Rain always seems to come on Thursdays!

Tin Whistle 2.19
Course:
Altadena

Date

The cold morning may have kept a few players at home but we did have a nice turnout of 20 members on what turned out to be a very nice morning.  Herman took top honors in a tie breaker with Park who had to settle for second. Russ was in the money again with third place, with Harry Hirakawa and Ralph tied for fourth. The prize money was shared around with three skins awarded to a couple of Jims and Tom.  There were no on-in-ones carded.

Alhambra 1.19
Course:
Alhambra GC

Date

After some discussion the tee box about the what tees to play, we ended up on the blue tees that turned out to be, for the most part, black tees.  That may have something to due with the scores  being a little high for this group(?).  We played winter rules, finding many balls in the fairway with a good  amount of mud.  Ralph came out on top of the leaderboard with low gross, a skin and an on-in-one. Jack took low net.

Todays tournament big winner was Paul who, with the only skin picked up todays skin pool plus the carry over from the last tournament where there were no skins.  Drinks are on Paul!   Mike won low net in a tie breaker over Doc.  Don's fine round was good for third place and our outgoing President, Jack, snagged fourth place, paying for his round today. Tom took the only one on-in-one on hole 6 (or 2 depending on your numbering system)

LGLN 12.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

Our last of the year LGLN tournament fielded 18 members on a crisp morning with fast greens.  Don feeling relaxed after a nice Christmas vacation, took low gross honors with Vester close behind. Mike Anderson secured low net with a three way tie for second. Vester had the only on-in-one and adding to his solo on-in-one last week.

There were no skin today!  The skin pool will carry over to our first tournament of next year.

2 Man Scramble/Putt 12.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

All enjoyed another fantastic SoCal day playing 2-Man Scramble. Ralph and Russ finished with a very nice 38 and good enough to take low team net.  Harry, Doc, Tom Story and Vester shared second place.

Ralph also won the putting contest finishing within 1 ft of the hole on a long breaking downhill putt.

Red White & Blue 12.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

We had a great turnout on a chamber of commerce day in Altadena where we were joined Bert, our newest member. Park had a breakout day taking Low Net by three strokes and added two of only three skins. (The club may have to start issuing 1099s.)  Ralph took second and secured the last skin. Tom had the only carded on-in-one.

Van took low Gross with two skins to top the leaderboard, and Jim Stowell was close behind.

FLOGTON 11.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

There was a reasonable turnout for our annual FLOGTON tournament where you have all the advantages to play well, but did we?  Mulligans did not seem to be that helpful with scores far from remarkable. Our "first" group of Richard, Paul, Harry  and Leo took almost all the honors saving one skin for Herman and Russ's on-in-one.  Leo took Low Net adding one of the Skins to his take.   It was fun to tee it up in the fairway and hit driver especially on the long holes 4 and 5.

4 Man Scramble 11.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

Our 4-Man Scramble led to a tight finish with Ralph, Russ, Kim and Van taking first after posting a gross score 2 under par and a net 6 under.  One shot back was Dave, Bob, Herman and Ray. Followed by Richard and company. There was a nice turnout of 20 players for the popular scramble format.

Eaton Canyon 11.18
Course:
Eaton Canyon

Date

Eaton canyon seemed to be a tough course today with hard and fast greens. Jim Nelson edged out Vester for low gross and had the only on-in-one and a skin, while Ray Spano took low net and also added a skin.

Turkey Shoot 11.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

There was a nice turnout of 25 members plus one prospective member(?) for our annual Turkey Shoot.  Vester really could buy a turkey with his winnings today taking part in the low gross payout, one of two skins and 2 on-in-ones.... Nice shooting!

Jim Rutledge shared in the winnings with Low Net honors plus a skin and should have enough for that turkey.

The rest of the winners may have to settle for a turkey sandwich.

Low Net/ Low Putts 11.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

There was a great turnout for our first November tournament were most seemed to enjoy the new course routing.  Dave topped the money list by taking the only skin of the day with a net birdie on the par 3 hole 8 (the old 4).  There were some new names on the leaderboard with Bob Bowdoin edging out Steve Hunt for low net with Richard close at hand.  Then, with a steady hand. Harry Hiarakawa took low putts honors followed close by  Mike, Russ, Ralph and Jim Stowell.  There were no on-in-ones recorded.

5 Of Clubs 10.18/Putting
Course:
Altadena

Date

Once again we've found that 5 clubs is all it takes!  Low scores were comperable to regular rounds and there was a tight finish with all the winners within 2 strokes.

Jim Stowell took low net honors in a tie breaker with Ralph, but Ralph was the big winner today with a skin, an on-in-one and second in low net.  We had a modest turnout but enjoyed a beautiful morning

LGLN/Putting 9.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

There was a geat turnout for our end-of-the-month LG/LN tournament. (But no putting!  Sorry guys. We forgot to setup the putting contest but will be sure to do that next week)

Kim was the big winner today edging out Jim Nelson for low gross and added one of two skins and an on-in one.  Harry Missakian took the other skin.  Ray Spano took low net honors.

2 Man Match Play 9.18
Course:
Altadena

Date

Everyone seemed to enjoy our first Match Play tournament. (We had one scheduled earlier in the year but go rained out!).  Match play brings out something different in the game, perhaps a bit more competitiveness, and all in good fun. The two ties were resolved in different creative ways, Jack and Edgar used a coin toss, while Park and Paul had a playoff hole.  We will try to formalize handling ties and other technical issues, but all worked out well for a good morning of golf.

Hansen Dam 9.18
Course:
Hansen Dam

Date

We fielded 9 members on a busy morning at the fine Hansen Dam,  along with three other clubs using this popular course.  Kim continued his strong play taking low gross, three on-in-ones and a skin.  Jim Stowell was close behind starting out with back to back birdies on 2 & 3, adding two skins and an on-in-one but got bit on one hole.  Don shared second with Jim, also taking a skin and on on-in-one being one of only two players avoiding an 8 or 9.

Rob managed low net with two skins and a long birdie putt on 11. Ralph took second in low net with strong play on the back 9 also avoiding the dreaded 8+.

Blind Partners 9.18

There was only on on-in-one from Russ on hole 4.

Another fine morning in Pasadena, with schools starting and vacations winding down we saw a few players return to the fold.  One of our newer members, Tom Storey made it out early with Russ and Ralph.  John Gunther back from one vacation made it in for a round, but is heading for Hawaii.  Jim Nelson continued his strong play just missing breaking 40, and added one of two skins. Tom McGuinness was very close behind with a 41 which earned him Low Net for the day.  Richard took a second skin and combined with a second  in low net.  There were two on-in-ones by the team of Ralph and Russ both on hole 4.

Low Putts/Low Net
Course:
Altadena

Tom took the only one-in-one, perhaps others were playing for low putts and chipping it close?
